A effort to try to archive the official forums in some aspect.

Post by random1543 »

Posted on the official forums but good to post here to for preservation reasons

Am trying to keep the forums archived in some aspect rather then everything disappearing and lost to time.

I have currently only included official dev forums and some are already lost to time as the feedback links are dead already
I am still adding to the list, if anyone here commented on the older feedback posts are you still able to get back to them?

Also if anyone has any important threads they can think of I will add, one I gotta add is the David King thread
Also as i said on on official forums am happy to archive peoples posts for them and add them under a folder with their username.

Example is skull merchant feedback link is dead but may be able to get to it if you commented on it
https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-dayligh ... 6-6-0-ptb[

Here is Drive but also have it locally saved in case online archives are lost.

Thank you for having me here and hope more members move over to here! :D

i went ahead and stickied your post since this would be a lovely community effort.

i think in order to properly archive the site, it needs to be scraped in whole. i'd recommend web archival engines (like archive.org if BHVR hasn't excluded themselves yet) or ghostarchive.

i'll take a gander this weekend and see what options there are. maybe i can cobble together a system for this.

Thanks! Yeah my way was defiantly not the most efficient way to do but good bulk of dev threads at least from last two years have been saved.

I tried to chuck the forum shutting down thread on way back machine and noticed it just archived with nothing on the page.
not experienced in archiving, Just didn't want forums to be fully lost to time

thought about using https://archive.li/ then would have to have mega thread for all the links as they save each page of a thread Individually from testing with it.

i could probably try to host an instance of HTTrack and see if i can snag the whole website. the only concern is mainly just trying to preserve media (images, videos, etc.) since they have these files uploaded to a CDN. but i'll take a look tonight and see

Yeah media is one that screenshots dont help with, have been doing one fourm "The Continued Ignorance of Performance Issues Continues to Hamper Player Fun" which was very heavy on video links, I have been able to link every video in the thread up until like page 29 at the moment in a separate doc.

there should be a way to capture CDN content easily. i think it might require some recursive indexing though. but it should be do-able

not always unfortunately. IA's crawlers can be quite slow at times and doesn't always grab all the content of a site. with something this time sensitive (less than 30 days), there's not really a whole lot of room. :(

while true, most content should still end up preserved though, so we might lose some new information but if it does a full crawl when it does the forum it should be pretty comprehensive or at least have 95% of the content on it.
considering you can run a forum off your own pc with hardly any maintenance costs i am quite perplexed on why the forum would have to be shut down and not just made into a not officially supported and moderated forum

i will not join the discord slop though so ill be hanging out here instead

I posted this on Official forums as well but I tried to use way back machine on one thread and it just save itself as a blank page, another user uploaded same thread and it managed to save on way back why I decided to save as just documents people can look at. (i dont have experience in archiving just wanted to make sure as much posts as possible are archived)

I've also seen others state they are trying to archive forums in other ways, been busy so haven't screen capped much but getting back into it in next few days.

Yeah and shutting it down so quickly I found strange, barley get over a months notice its shutting down I guess thats when the next bill comes in?
